A 95,000 ton aircraft carrier of the United States Navy made a brief apprearance in Martin Place today, startling passers-by and raising alarm until flickering out of existence. The unnerving scene caused a traffic standstill and the dispatch of a Police Chopper. The ship has been reappearing all over Sydney in the previous few weeks, but only now for the first time has its name been able to be discerned; the USS New Orleans. Early reports can only make tenuous connections between it and Sydney; 95 years ago it limped into the Harbour after a battle during WWII, in desperate need of rhinoplasty. It was repaired at Cockatoo Island before being sent back home.

Talkback: Cockatoo Island Research
By Woodward + Bernstein

Empty Vessels has uncovered a wealth of historical records kept of Cockatoo Island that chronicle its shipbuilding activities. Very interestingly, all empty vessels sighted in and around Sydney have been found to have a connection in one way or another to Cockatoo Island. We are still investigating possible consequences of this correlation.

Talkback: Suggestions?
By Woodward + Bernstein

With the recent admission by The Australian Government that the Cockatoo Island Data Facility received leniency with regard to International Law for Data Transmission, do you think this warrants a more formal investigation by the Ombudsman into dealings by REAL DATA?

Analysis of data transmission anomalies from two seconds before the appearance of the mysterious ships have yielded IP addresses that are associated with the high-security data facility on Cockatoo Island. Though the association could be circumstantial, experts maintain that the ultra-secretive company in charge of the facility should hand over transmission logs to avoid undue scrutiny of the company’s operations. This is unlikely to occur, given the long history [Company] has of fervent evasion in dealing with the media.

More strange phenomena occurred over the weekend in Sydney with a 500 metre long oil tanker manifesting itself alongside Cook+Philip Park on Sunday. It is assumed this apparition is in association with the spate of similar incidents occurring over the last few months, but NSW Police are hesitant to acknowledge this for sure. No details on the outcomes of their investigations have been produced, and we here at Empty Vessels presume that their detective dead-ends are due to poor leadership and inadequate team operation. Our postulations and inspections of this mystery are ongoing and we will inform you as soon as information comes to light.

Continuing our “Postulation  Series”, more information gained recently from Empty Vessel’s sources strengthens our hypothesis that there is an undeniable link between these apparitions and the Cockatoo Island Data Centre. Recently leaked videophone recordings of conversations between John Baudrillard, CEO of REAL DATA, and a known hacker group calling itself “gibson, william” reportedly captured them scheduling times for data portals to the Cockatoo Island Facility being opened. In an unusual deviation from their conventional silence to media requests, a spokesperson for REAL DATA strenuously denied the conversation taking place, claiming that it easily could have been a totally fabricated recording. Nevertheless, Baudrillard’s talk of the Data Centre “returning to its original purpose - machining and refining material, whether such ‘material’ be physical or virtual” has potent implications for the world we live in today.

Empty Vessels is proud to be the first to break imagery smuggled out of the ultra-high security data facility on Cockatoo Island. The complex, founded in 2009 by former employees of Google and DARPA, has exercised extreme measures in ensuring its operations go unnoticed by the surrounding population, even managing to exert pressure on the Australian Government to enact a law prohibiting photography of the island from the mainland.

Although described as a “research institute for data mining and server technology”, the photo shows some form of supercomputer operating in the old Turbine Hall. Further analysis of the image may give clues for the operational intent of the supercomputer.

Two drivers are lucky to be walking away with only minor injuries after a near head-on collision caused by the apparition of another Empty Vessel on Market St this evening. The flickering mirage only appeared for a few seconds, but caused Samuel Debord (great-nephew of the philosopher Guy Debord) to swerve into oncoming traffic.

More mysterious ships have been sighted in and around Sydney. The flickering mirages have caused consternation amongst pedestrians and played havoc with traffic. Stunned Japanese sightseers were nevertheless still able to quickly snap images and video.

Early evening entertainment was disrupted in the Rocks area of George St, Sydney yesterday. For a period of a few minutes, a 70 metre navy destroyer appeared in the path of traffic. A large crowd of astonished passers-by and tourists gathered, before the apparition faded out of existence as quickly as it arrived. Police investigations into this spate of ships appearing in Sydney’s streets is ongoing.
